My name is
Åsmund Vignes, and I was born in 1951. I currently live in
Stavanger, a town situated on the south-west coast of Norway. I am
educated a teacher, and have been teaching for more than 30 years. I
teach mathematics, biology, geography and science.
I became
interested in woodturning for more than 30 years ago when I first
saw a man demonstrating woodturning. Since then, woodturning has
been a dear hobby of mine. I do all kinds of woodturning, from small
miniatures to big bowls and vases. I am always looking for the true
beauty of the wood, and I am inspired by the beauty of mathematical
graphs, and also by the shapes and forms I see in nature.
Achievements:
I have been
asked to do demos in England and USA. Some of my turnings are at
“the Woodturning center” in Philadelphia. The most fun part of my
woodturning “career” so far is “the woodturning cruise” which I have
been a demonstrator on
four times in the past. I will again
demonstrate on the next cruise in August this year.
My workshop is
filled with wood, and rough turned objects. It is exciting to look
at a piece of wood, and wonder of what objects there might be inside
it. My job, as a turner, is to fetch what’s inside it, and get it
out. My favourite tool is the ring tool. I would be completely lost
without it, and I use it for all my hollow forms. I often make vases
on my demos. It takes me from 30 to 60 minutes to make one,
depending on size and inlays.
Right now my
teaching takes most of my time, and I therefore look forward to
retire in two years. I have a lot of ideas for things I want to
make, and I hope I will get time to fulfil when I retire.
Some of my
pupils are building a website for me which I hope will be released
soon.
